Why We Need to Talk about Harvey Weinstein

October 13, 2017

We want to talk about the new Star Wars trailer. We want to speculate about whether Porgs will be the new Ewoks, and if Rey will turn to the dark-side. We want to talk about fun stuff, but today we can’t. Today we have to talk about a monster. Harvey Weinstein doesn’t have a problem, he is the problem. As three white men, the Pop Vultures aren’t the best suited to talk about what it’s like to be one of his victims, or one of countless others who have been preyed upon by men in power, but we are exactly the demographic that needs to be discussing the problem.

Now before we get too far into this, if your gut reaction to this post is something along the lines of #notallmen, please take a moment to go fuck yourself. We can discuss male fragility another time. This isn’t about women against men, it’s about basic human decency against vile behavior.

Now — back to talking about award winning rapist, Harvey Weinstein, and why we need to talk about it. These acts don’t happen in a vacuum. Heinous acts like this require two things: a power structure to supply victims and maintain privilege, and the silence of countless individuals. Every time someone heard or saw something but decided their movie or their career was more important not only gave more power to a predator, but took something more from the victims. The burden to speak up shouldn’t be on the victims, it should also be on the witnesses. White men in particular have a responsibility to speak up because we are predominately in roles of power in this country (for now). We can either be part of the problem or part of the solution.

We want to say, in our small way, that we’re here to support and empower all victims of sexual assault and rape. We implore everyone to stand up against these predators and shine a flashlight in your little corner of the world. It may not seem like a lot, but if we all do our part pretty soon the cockroaches won’t have anywhere left to hide.
